Presence: A Mindful Approach to Nursing Care

flower artIn this workshop, nurses will learn about mindfulness as a way to cultivate presence as an inner resource to meet the demands and challenges of nursing in healthcare today. Mindfulness is an evidenced based approach shown to decrease stress and improve resilience and well-being.

Presentation and discussion will explore applications of mindfulness in the clinical setting that benefits both nurse and patient experience. Practical tools will be provided to develop resiliency in order to navigate stressors in health care today that lead to compassion fatigue, burnout and moral injury. 

Upon completion of this workshop nurses will be able to:

  • Describe two foundational principles of mindfulness and its relationship to presence
  • Identify two clinical applications of mindfulness 
  • Identify three mindfulness tools to prevent compassion fatigue and burnout

Tree picTree Dunbar, BSN, CHPN, has worked as a hospice nurse and manager for 36 years and has held both field and administrative positions. She brings a unique perspective that encompasses both practitioner and leadership concerns in navigating the complexities and challenges in healthcare today. She has also been a student of the Diamond Approach spiritual path for over 20 years. She is currently working towards a Nurse Coach certification. 

Jan Landry1Jan Landry, BSN MA has worked in the field of hospice care both as a nurse and as a chaplain, for over 30 years.  She currently teaches Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction, meditation retreats and workshops in a variety of clinical and corporate settings in the San Francisco Bay Area as well as internationally. As a co-owner of Awareness and Relaxation Training, she hopes to support others in cultivating a practice of mindfulness that can be integrated into one’s daily life to support health and well-being both at work and at home.
