The Awareness and Relaxation Faculty

Philippa Bornstein, B.A., has been a practitioner of mindfulness meditation for many years and received lay ordination at San Francisco Zen Center. After training as a Buddhist chaplain at the Insight Meditation Center in Redwood City, she volunteered as a multi-faith chaplain at O'Connor Hospital. She is experienced in teaching meditation practices to people who are facing stress, pain, illness, loss and grief. Presently she co-leads a meditation group in Pacifica. Carla Brennan. M.Ed., was director of Mindfulness–Based Stress Reduction Programs (MBSR) for nine years at the Synthesis Center in Amherst, Massachusetts. She completed the MBSR Teacher Development Intensive at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, MA and studied with founder Jon Kabat-Zinn, director Saki Santorelli and other senior MBSR teachers. Carla has practiced mindfulness meditation since 1975. She began her hatha yoga practice in 1972 and has studied qigong and T'ai Chi for over 15 years. Julie Forbes, Ph.D., teaches the Mindfulness Meditation Program for A.R.T. in corporate, educational, community and clinical settings. She received a doctorate in psychology in 1999 and has twenty years of experience working in the computer industry. Julie’s inpiration for teaching originates out o fher own meditation practice, which she initiated in 1985. She has completed professional training in Mindfulness–Based Stress Reduction with Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D. and through the Stress Reduction Clinic at El Camino Hospital. Gail L. Lewis, C.M.T., teaches yoga and mindfulness for A.R.T. Gail is a yoga and movement teacher who has taught for several years. She is a sincere practitioner of mindfulness meditation who has taught yoga to students of all ages. She is skilled in working with a variety of people with various medical conditions. Mark Neenan, M.Ed., interned at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center’s Stress Reduction Clinic. Formerly a World Health Organization researcher and UCSC’s Disability Resource Center Program Coordinator, he has 20 years of experience practicing and teaching awareness meditation and movement in Asia, Europe and the United States. Marcy Reynolds, B.A., is a longtime student of holistic health, having taught qigong, yoga, nutrition and western herbalism for many years. Chronic Fatigue led her to the self-healing practice of qigong which has been instrumental in her complete recovery and continues to bring depth, peace and healing into her life and the lives of her students. Bob Stahl, Ph.D., directs Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction programs at Camino Medical Group in Sunnyvale, El Camino Hospital in Mountain View, Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz, O'Connor Hospital in San Jose, and Santa Cruz Medical Foundation. Bob has conducted many mindfulness programs for physicians and health care professionals, as well as for those seeking relief from chronic stress and illness. He also works individually with clients interested in a Mindfulness-Based health program and lifestyle. Keith Urban is a Mindfulness and Yoga and a Mindfulness Meditation teacher for A.R.T who began his study of Yoga and mindfulness practices with Swami Satchidananda over 30 years ago. He has also studied extensively with Yogi Bhajan and Pir Vilayat Khan, integrating and expanding his understanding of the body-mind-spirit connection, and of how mindful movement helps facilitate relaxation and well being. Karen Zelin, B.A., is a Mindfulness and Yoga and a Mindfulness Meditation teacher for A.R.T. at the Santa Cruz Medical Foundation.
